Stitching over Pictures

When you load a picture, there is an Alignment Stitches page in the Load Design Wizard. Use this wizard page to add a layer of alignment stitches ahead of any other stitches in the embroidery. The alignment stitches can be used to position the embroidery correctly over the picture before stitching out the embroidery. Mark at least two points on the picture that are clearly defined. For example, a sharp corner on some feature, the center of a particular small dot and so on.

Alternatively, you may add and remove alignment stitches in the work area using the Alignment Stitches toolbar functions.

How to Stitch Over a Picture

  1. Save the finished embroidery.

  2. Click File, Page Setup and the Page Setup dialog box appears.

  3. Ensure Print Worksheet and Print Plan View are selected (checked) and Print Picture is deselected (unchecked).

  4. Print Plan View is optional if you have used automatic corner alignment stitches. However, you may still find the plan view useful if the edges of the picture are hard to see on the fabric.

  5. Set the desired Worksheet Options.

  6. In the Plan Options, select Print Whole Embroidery or Print Alignment Stitches Only as desired. If the alignment stitches will be obscured by the rest of the embroidery, choose Print Alignment Stitches Only. Otherwise, it is generally better to choose Print Whole Embroidery.

  7. Click OK.

  8. Click Print Print_icon.jpg and print the worksheet and plan view.

  9. Notice that the first color block on the worksheet is the blue color block for the alignment stitches. If desired, change the color using Alignment Stitch Thread Color Alignment_Stitch_Thread_Color_icon.jpg. Alternatively, you can use the stitch navigation controls on the embroidery machine to step through the alignment stitches without stitching them onto your fabric.

  10. Click File, Page Setup and the Page Setup dialog box appears.

  11. Deselect Print Worksheet and Print Plan View (unchecked) and select Print Picture.

  12. If you wish to print onto transfer paper, select the Flip Picture for Iron-On Tee Shirt Transfer option. Otherwise, leave it unselected if you wish to print directly onto fabric.

  13. If you wish to choose a different position for the picture on your printable fabric or transfer paper, select Center, Top or Bottom.

  14. Load your printer with the transfer paper or printable fabric.

  15. Click Print Print_icon00357.jpg and print the picture.

  16. If you have printed on transfer paper, transfer the picture to your fabric.

  17. Hoop up your fabric, with the picture as straight as possible in the hoop.

  18. Transfer the embroidery to your embroidery machine, and select it for embroidering on the machine.

  19. Use the step stitch-by-stitch function on your embroidery machine, and step forward to the first point of the first alignment cross or corner.

  20. If you have used alignment crosses, the alignment point is the center of the cross. If you have used automatic corners, the corner point is the alignment point.

  21. Compare the needle position to the position of the cross on the plan view. If they do not match, use the position buttons on the machine to move the needle to the correct position.

  22. If you used automatic corners, you can simply check that the needle is at the corner of the picture, without referring to the plan view.

  23. Step forward through the stitches in the cross or corner until the machine moves to the center of the second cross or corner.

  24. Compare the needle position to the position of the alignment stitch on the plan view. If they do not match by more than one or two millimeters, this is probably because the fabric is not straight enough in the hoop. Adjust the fabric in the hoop and repeat from step 17.

  25. When the alignment is correct, select the next color in the embroidery (the first 'drawing color') and start to stitch out the embroidery.
